Commute

walking slowly,
i watch the world whirlwind,
careful not to get swept up in
the wild undercurrent of the frantic city.
with my thumb & index fingers
i frame the mindless rushing.
following this photographic foreplay
i brandish a more intrusive lens.
invisibility becomes nearly unachievable:
the challenge serves delicious anxiety.
several souls are collected
before attention is drawn to the time.
late for my trivial job,
i toss the camera’s strap around my neck, then
slip seamlessly into the stream.
